This class is ideal for anyone who is interested in learning more about the benefits of Scrum or User Stories, or a Team wanting a Scrum reset. Scrum Essentials introduces you to the values and principles from the Agile Manifesto, as well as the framework defined by the Scrum Guide. It explores the roles (accountabilites) and meetings (events) in Scrum, so that everyone understands who does what, and when.  It looks at the five levels of planning in Scrum, with hands-on exercises allowing practice creating Personas, writing User Stories, and relatively sizing Backlog items.

Day 1: As a class participant, I want to…

1. Learn about Lean so that I can talk about the origins of Agile and Scrum

2. Understand Agile, so that I can distinguish it from Scrum

3. Describe the overall Scrum Framework, so that I know how the parts of Scrum integrate

4. List the accountabilities in Scrum, so that I know how the Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Developers work together as members of the Scrum Team

5. Understand the Scrum artifacts of Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, and Potentially Useable Increment, so that I know how to use them to share valuable information

6. List and explain key events of Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Retrospective, so that I know what is happening before, during, and after every Sprint

7. Experience a Scrum Sprint, so that I can learn by doing

 

Day 2: As a class participant, I want to…

1. Experience User Story writing and refinement so that I can practice different techniques

2. Explain the five levels of planning in Agile so that I can improve the overall effectiveness of our Product delivery and focus the Team on the highest customer value

3. Demonstrate how to model customers and Stakeholders as Personas so that I can ensure my User Stories are targeting the most valuable use cases

4. Understand how the Scrum team builds their Product Backlog so that I know the purpose of User Stories and how to work with my Team in an Agile way

5. Learn how to write a good User Story, so that I can ensure everyone is aligned on the work that needs to be done

6. Understand acceptance criteria so that my User Stories have clear conditions of satisfaction

7. Learn how to evaluate work using relative sizing so that I have an efficient method to aid in planning

8. Learn techniques to split Stories so that I can work with my Team to create Stories that can be completed in a single iteration
