This class is a two-day immersion into the world of Scrum. It is ideal for anyone who is interested in learning more about the benefits of Scrum. Scrum Foundations is full of practical, real-world techniques that can be implemented immediately at your workplace. This class explores the five levels of planning in Scrum so attendees understand writing a vision statement, identifying roles and personas, working with user stories and sizing items. It will also explore metrics and technical debt. Hands-on exercises demonstrate key concepts and let you experience the benefits of Scrum firsthand.

Day 1: As a Scrum Essentials class participant, I want to…

  1. identify the limitations of traditional project management, so that I understand what problems Scrum solves.
  2. explain the theories Scrum is based on, so that I know why Scrum works.
  3. understand Agile so that I can distinguish it from Scrum
  4. describe the overall Scrum Framework so that I know how the parts of Scrum integrate.
  5. list the roles in Scrum, so that I know how the members of a Scrum team work together.
  6. use supporting Scrum artifacts, so that the team can better radiate valuable information.
  7. explain the key meetings in Scrum, so that I know what is happening before, during and after each sprint.


Day 2: As a Scrum Essentials class participant, I want to…

  1. review the overall Scrum framework, so that I know how to identify Scrum roles, meetings and artifacts.
  2. explain the five levels of planning in Scrum, so that I can improve the overall effectiveness of our product delivery
  3. demonstrate developing a Vision Statement so that I can provide a guiding light for the product.
  4. demonstrate how to model roles and personas, so that stories are targeting the most valuable use cases
  5. explore ways to refine the product backlog so that I can create roadmaps for my product
  6. explain the purpose of a backlog and user stories so that I can focus the team on the highest customer value.
  7. understand basic criteria of a good user story, so that I can ensure the team understands exactly what is needed
  8. coach team members how to relatively size backlog items so that the team can feel confident in how much to take in the next sprint
  9. experience a Scrum Sprint so that I can learn by doing.
  10. use the right metrics, so that the team has data for continuous improvement.
  11. detect when Scrum may be not implemented correctly so that we can avoid potential mistakes.
  12. avoid technical debt, so that we can deliver faster with quality
